The 19th Amendment secured women’s right to vote after more than seventy years of organizing, petitioning, and refusing to be sidelined. Its ratification marked a constitutional shift — expanding who counted in American democracy.

But the amendment did not guarantee access for all women. For many — particularly Black women in the South, Indigenous women, Asian American women, and others — the ballot remained obstructed for decades. The struggle to make the promise of 1920 real continued well into the mid-20th century and beyond.
